Original Artwork & Commissions

Who am I?

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. This all got started with encouragement by my father, a lithographer, and an endless supply of paper. Painting followed using gouache. Early influences included non-objective abstracts (talking the '50s here), and the impressionist landscape style of the Group of Seven in Canada.

Following an engineering career, I returned to serious painting in 2002. After a series of workshops by the Federation of Canadian Artists, I began tackling a range of subjects, in various mediums. My focus gradually settled on figure and portrait work, with some landscapes.

During this time, and to this day, I am inspired by the styles used in commercial illustration, particularly in North America.  And, of course, by many contemporary representational painters.

I have exhibited regularly, and do commissioned works. Also I'm a long-time member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and the Salt Spring Island Painters Guild for whom I regularly provide workshops.

Commissions

I am pleased to do commissions of a favourite subject of yours.  The process goes like this.

Get in touch with me and we'll discuss the subject, what you see as the finished piece (size, colour, style) and how it fits into your home or office.  Then:

  • based on photo references (mine or yours) I'll prepare one or more layout drawings, or a colour sketch, for review and approval.

  • With approval I'll prepare a price quotation, including framing and shipping as requested.  A 50% deposit is then required.

  • I'll prepare the painting for final approval and delivery.  The balance of the price will then be due.
